Register Your Twitter Username – It’s FREE!

I still meet people who are unsure how Twitter fits into their business.  That’s ok.  I don’t think you have to figure it all out right now.  In fact, many people and organizations are still trying to figure out their Twitter strategy.  However, here’s some advice that you should take right away:

Go ahead, right now, and register your Twitter username(s). Even if you don’t know how you’ll use it, you need to get your name before somebody else does.

  • Get your name before someone with malicious intent registers your name.  They may try to squat on it or try to sell it back to you.  Or, they could publish negative comments about you or your organization.  He who hesitates could become a victim of social media identity theft.
  • Get your name before someone who shares your same name gets it.
  • There are still many good generic names available to register.  Every day I get followed by someone who has a Twitter username that I’m surprised was still available.  And since I use Topify to manage my follow message alerts via email, I’m able to see when they became a Twitter user.  They usually just registered a new Twitter username that surprises me was still available.

And, here’s the thing – it’s not like registering a .com domain name that comes with a yearly fee of $10.  As of right now (May 2009), registering a Twitter username is free!  It’s FREE!  Go get your Twitter username. Pick out a good one for yourself.

Once you lock up your Twitter username(s), then hop on over to this article and learn how to master your social domain.
